초 록

Material dimensionality plays a crucial role in determining material physical properties. In particular, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit diverse properties that depend on their composition: semiconductors, semimetals, metals, or superconductors. Though electrical, mechanical, and magnetic studies of 2D materials as new material systems are being conducted, there is an evident lack of direct atom-by-atom visualization, limiting insight on these highly exciting material systems. In exploring and developing these emerging materials, high resolution electron microscopy-based techniques, now capable of analyzing these materials and devices with better than 0.1 nm resolution, becomes ever more important.  In this talk, I will present our recent studies on the characterization of 2D layered materials from Graphene to TMDs, and their integrated hetero-structures.  The location and nature of individual atoms, defects, interfaces, and in-situ phase transformation and layer by layer shearing of 2D crystals will be presented and discussed in detail.  In addition, we have developed several virtual reality (VR) contents for nano-science education and outreach as the virtual reality (VR) program is becoming a great tool for teaching today’s young energetic mind. The audience will be encouraged to experience some of our virtual reality contents.
